Here's SFYIMBY's position on housing"
With growing recognition that our housing shortage drives many of San Francisco’s ills, SF’s supervisors unanimously approved a new blueprint one year ago to make room for 82,000 new homes in coming years, with several conditions:
• More than half (46,000) of those homes must be affordable.
• New rules must encourage development in wealthier neighborhoods to reverse decades of housing denial.
• The city must prioritize new housing along transit lines.
• Lower-income and underserved “priority equity” communities must have protections against displacement.
Meanwhile, officials have struggled to make rule changes and pass reforms, and California’s housing watchdogs have threatened penalties, including loss of local control of housing policy.
2024 is a critical year, all while the city faces budgetary and economic headwinds. Starting with a new map that shows which neighborhoods can break through decades-old limits and add density and height, can city planners, elected officials, and community leaders work together and usher in a new housing era for San Francisco?
